The history of the company dates back to 1887, when the operations of the Davis Sewing Machine Company were purchased by an American businessman George P. Huffman. After the acquisition, he shifted the company in Dayton, Ohio.
The company unveiled its first bicycle in 1892 and in 1999, the company introduced its first electronic scooter. In the year 1924, the Huffman Manufacturing Company came into existence with the extreme efforts of the founder's son Horace M. Huffman. After that, the company started using the brand Dayton for manufacturing and distributing bicycles. In 1962, Frederick C. Smith and Horace Huffman, Jr. became Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the company respectively.
The company stronger its Roots in the Outdoor Power Equipment area after the purchase of Diele and McGuire Manufacturing in 1964. After four years, it became a public company following which its shares were listed on the American Stock Exchange. The company purchased the assets of Royce Union Bicycle Company following the sale of Gerry Baby Products Company in 1997. Additionally, it also bought a basketball goods company Sure Shot International. 2004 was the year when the company's sports division (that manufactures sporting goods) was purchased by Russell Corporation. The company sales reached 100 million bicycles by the end of the year 2006. Huffy Corporation has four subsidiaries, Washington Inventory Service, Huffy Service First, Huffy Sports Company and Huffy Bicycle Company.
