It started its journey in the year 1966 under the name Capital Cable Television Company Limited. Its first cable connection has been provided in Sherwood Park, Alta. In 1983, the company was renamed as Shaw Cablesystems Limited and was publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "SJR". It became Canada's 4th largest cable operator in 1985. The company launched children program "The Shaw Teddy Bears" in 1989. Further, Shaw Cablesystems Limited changed its name to Shaw communications in 1993. Shaw Communications Inc is organized its business in two sectors namely Cable and Satellite. The company has five subsidiaries including Shaw Media, Shaw Broadcast Services, Shaw Business, Shaw Tracking and Shaw Direct. Since its establishment, the company has served more than 6 million subscribers consisting 2.3 million cable customers, 2 million Internet and 1.2 million digital telephone subscribers. As of 2011, Shaw Communications had workforce of approximately 12,500 employees.
