FirstBus, now called FirstGroup, is a transportation services company that operates in the United States, Canada, Denmark, Scotland, Ireland and United Kingdom. The shares of the company are listed on the London Stock Exchange. In England, it is one of the leading bus service operating companies and carries a large number of passengers every day. The history of the bank dates back to April 1995, when two companies Grt Bus Group and Badgerline joined hands. Initially, it has operations in Scotland, Wales and United Kingdom with a fleet of 5,600 buses and the head office was in Aberdeen. Trevor Smallwood and Moir Lockhead were named the Chairman and Chief Executive officers of the company respectively. After that, FirstBus started expanding its business by acquiring other transport companies like Strathclyde Buses and Gm Buses North in the year 1996. In December of the following year, it adopted the current name FirstGroup. After the privatization of British Rail, the company moves forward to get a 24.5 percent stake in Great Western Holdings and made the First Great Eastern a wholly owned subsidiary. In 1999, the company stepped up with the purchase of a school bus transportation services company Ryder Public Transport Services in America. 2003 was the year when it bought the majority shares (90 percent) of Aircoach and after two years, FirstGroup acquired the remaining shares making Aircoach a wholly owned subsidiary. The company in 2007 decided to purchase the assets of an American based Coach service provider Laidlaw. In 2011, the German operations of the company were purchased by Marwyn European Transport. FirstGroup in 1998 established its first overseas presence in Hong Kong by starting the New World First Bus operations. The American division of the company, FirstGroup America specializes in transit contracting and student transit services. It is also the owner of the North America's first intercity coach service provider iconic Greyhound.
