What is Garmin Contact?
Garmin is a Swiss Company that prodcues navigation devices and softwares for the aviation, marine, fitness, sports, outdoor, recreational purposes etc. The company is based in Switzerland though its operational headquarters is located in Kansas, USA. It is the parent company of Garmin International Inc., and Garmin Corporation. Garmin is listed on Nasdaq as GRMN and is the constituent of Standard and Poor's 500. One of its largest facilities sits in Taiwan. It is operated under different names in some countries such as Formar in Belgium, Garmin AMB in Canada, Belanor in Norway and Trepat in Spain.
Garmin was formed in 1989 by Gary Burrel and Min H Kao in Kansas. It was then started as ProNav and its first product was a GPS device, GPS 100. GPS 100 was designed for marine operations and was so successful that the ProNav had to establish factory to meet the growing demands. Later on ProNav was renamed as Garmin carrying the first two initials of its Founders Gary and Min. US Army hired Garmin as its supplier in 1991. GPS receiver gained popularity among army Men during Gulf War while GPS receivers was one of the best selling products launched in 2000.
In the 90's, Garmin was making rapid growth and had the sale of $105 million. It has made profit of $64 million on sale worth $233 million in 1999. In the same year, the company entered into an agreement with Aircell on the ground of using latter's air ground link for providing flight communication services. Garmin had the sale of 3 million GPS units by 2000. Till then, the company had fifty models which were available in over 100 nations and sold through the network of more than 2000 distributors. With the strength of 1205 employees, Garmin was the holder of over thirty patents in GPS field. It went public in 2000 with the majority of shares owned by Kao. In 2003-04, Gary Burrel retired as CEO and chairman in the Board of Directors of the company. It became to first company to design the GPS devices with inbuilt maps in 2003. It made its applications to be operated on Mac OS X and unveiled its new logo in 2006. Its first retail store was opened in Michigan Avenue in Chicago in the same year.
Garmin acquired UPS Aviation Technologies, Inc., a unit of United Parcel Service. It acquisition has also covered several navigation solution providers like Digital Cyclone, Dynastream Innovation, Dyanstream etc.
In 2010, Garmin was made a Swiss Company and its headquarters was shifted from USA to Switzerland. Garmin was also announced as the parent company of Garmin group of companies.
The company designs various products to meet the navigational needs ranging from personal to aviation industry. Its products are available in the form of hand held GPS devices, maps, apps etc. Garmin classifieds its products into various brands such as Garmin Forerunner, Zumo, Vivofit, ECHO Fishfinders, GPSMAP, GTN 750, G1000 etc. Its discontinued models are iQue, 26x0, 7x00, Gnc etc.
Apart from devices, Garmin designed several navigation apps for computers and Mobile phones. Its mobile apps work on the platform like Android, Iphone and Windows phone. Garmin has been the sponsor of various sports team such as Middlesbrough, Garmin Sharp etc
