The company owns over 18 generating plants and 20 dams. Georgia Power is also relied on the oil and gas for power generation, which make up its 33 percent of generation sources.
Its Origin can be traced back to 1902 as Georgia Railway and Power Company, which was the street car operator in Georgia. The company was formed through the merger of all street car companies. In 1906, the company acquired Atlanta Crackers to GAIN more ridership for its electric streetcar fleet. Georgia Railway and Power Company purchased the Hydro plant in 1912 at Morgan Falls to meet the needs of the growing customers. The company was generating over 94,200 kilowatts of electricity through its Three hydro and two steam generating facilities by 1914.
In 1926, Georgia Railway and Power Company was purchased by Southeastern Power and Light Company and former was renamed as Georgia Power Company. It had become one of the largest electric utilities to serve most region of the state. Georgia Power acquired several other utility companies in 1927 which would expanded its to over 70 cities. In 1950, Georgia Power sold its Transit division. In 1970's, the company was successful to install its first nuclear plant at Baxley with the three main producing units. By 2003, the company had the customer base of 2 million people. In 2006, the merger of Savannah Electric with Georgia Power has added 150,000 more subscribers to its customers list. In 2010, the company completed its 19 mile long gas to connect McDonough-Atkinson plant followed by the introduction of Smart meters in 2012.
