What is Railway?
Indian Railways is one of the largest railway networks in the world. It is run by the Ministry of Railways, Govt. of India. The Indian Railways covers up 115,000 km of track over an area of 65,000 km and 7,500 stations and carries more than 25 million passengers daily to their destinations. Besides passenger services, the Indian Railways provides the parcel carry and freight services, which is the major source of its earning. Four Types of gauges are used by the Indian Railways for their tracks such as broad gauge, standard gauge, metre gauge, and two narrow gauges. Indian broad gauge is widely used guage in India while the Narrow gauges are installed on few places like hilly areas. The mascot of the Indian Railway is an elephant dressed in uniform with the lamp in the hand and is known as Bholu the guard elephant. Indian Railways shares some services with the neighboring countries like Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh. The slogan of the Indian Railways is "Lifeline of the Nation". The railways also regulates fourteen subsidiaries including BWEL, CRIS, CONCOR, IRCTC, RITES, RVNL etc. Indian Railways is also counted among one of the largest recruiters in the world and has the strength of over 1.6 million employees. Coming to the railway services in India, it was started in 1853 by the British. The first train service was provided from Bombay to Thane. After the independence of the country, the railway lines were nationalized in 1951 and was divided into six zones. Today Indian Railways has been divided in over 16 zones, which are also arranged in various divisions. In the 90's, the Indian Railways was passing through the modernization phase and made it computerized. In 2013, the company develops association with Indian Institute of Technology for the technological development in its coaches.
