What is Xcel Energy?

Xcel Energy is the public utility company headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is comprised of four subsidiaries namely Northern States Power-Minnesota, Northern States Power-Wisconsin, Public Service Company of Colorado, and Southwestern Public Service Co. It serves over 3.3 million electric customers and more than 1.8 million natural gas customers. Coming to its history, Xcel Energy was formed from threes utility companies namely Northern States Power Company, Public Service Company of Colorado and Southwestern Public Service. The Northern States Power Company was founded in 1909.
Later on it was merged with New Century Enegies (which was formed from the merger of Public Service Company of Colorado and Southwestern Public Service) to form Xcel Energy. The company has more than 10 coal plants to generate 7,600 Mega Watt of energy while it produces hydroelectic power from the plants located in Minnesota, Colorado and Wisconsin. It is also one of the largest Wind power generating companies in the USA.

Xcel Energy serves approximately 20% people of the United States since its services are spread in over ten US States. The company has different types of electricity transmission system as per the requirements such as 115,000 volts, 2,30,000 volts and 345,000 volts.

Many programs are being run by the company to save energy. Since 1998, the company has been running Xcel Energy Windsource program so that people could look for renewable energy source. In 2011, approximately 58,000 people shown interest for this energy saving program. Same year 2.3 million electricity and 261,800 natural gas users took part in the few Xcel Energy saving programs for homes and businesses. The company's renewable energy programs educate people to look for other energy source such as wind energy, solar energy, biomass energy etc.

Moreover', the company also uses biomass electricity which major source is forest harvest waste material. Xcel generates over 110 megawatts biomass electricity which is generated in its Northern Minnesota and Western Minnesota Power plant. Xcel has two nuclear plants which are meant for the fuel storage, first is Monticello Nuclear Generation Plant based in Monticello, Minnesota, and other one is Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, based in Red Wing, Minnesota etc.
