The first postal service was started in the USA in 1775 after appointing Benjamin Franklin as the first Postmaster General of the country. In 1792, the United States post Office Department came into existence by the enforcing of Postal Service Act and Rufus Easton was the first postmaster appointed under constitution. The 19th century saw the rapid development in the postal system of the USA. In 1820's, after introducing dead letter office, the US government considered waterways for the post roads. The US Government added railroads to the routes of the postal services in the country. The number of post offices grew to 27,000 from 75 by 1869. At that time, the Post Office Department was operating on 60,000 miles long route.

US postage stamps were begun to issue in 1847 and later on in 1850's, many services were started like stamped envelope, registered mail, street letter boxes etc. In 1863, the free mail delivery system was introduced along with the division of mail services in First Class, Second Class and Third Class. In 1927, Post Office Department started an international airmail service while in 1943 its postal zoining system covered 124 major cities. In 1971, Post Office Department was replaced by United States Postal Service.
